Things to consider before you start a new skincare routine

4 min read

Hello gorgeous people – welcome to the DaisyBloom blog! And perhaps there’s no better way to start than with a post that provides five foundational guidelines on what you need to consider before starting a new skincare routine.

It is almost daily when we are bombarded with advertising for some new skincare products offering us the very latest and greatest. Sure, it’s certainly tempting to copy someone else’s skincare routine entirely based on their appearance but remember that you are unique and it is best to tailor your regimen to meet your unique requirements. Do me a favour and please ask yourself these five questions before you start a new skincare routine –

1. Am I being consistent?

Let’s admit it – we are all attracted towards instant satisfaction. Always keep in mind that switching up your products too often can make you lose track of what is and what is not working. Too often if we don’t see visible results from our skincare routine in just a few days or weeks, we risk falling into the trap of deciding to abandon a product. Trust me, I have been there too! But the honest truth is that skincare ingredients can take up to three months to see any noticeable results. The long-term results of a daily routine will always be far superior to any one-time treatment. Ask yourself if you have really given your routine enough time to actually observe results? Be consistent with your skincare routine.

2. What is the primary concern for my skin?

Our skin tends to have specific problem areas – perhaps acne breakouts or hyperpigmentation is a problem for you, or maybe you’re only seeking to address the typical signs of ageing. Before embarking on a new skincare routine, determine your main skincare issue. It is certainly tempting to fix everything all in one go, however this might cause you to go overboard with advanced anti-ageing treatments, acne treatments and harsh peels, and still not see much change. So instead of going all in at once, make sure you know the exact concern you’re addressing before overhauling or starting a new skincare routine.

3. Do I have any skin allergies or sensitivities?

This might involve some trial and error but it is essential to check if you are allergic or have sensitivities to any specific skincare ingredients. Look out for what triggers you and tailor your needs according to that. And remember that even some natural products can cause issues with sensitive skin. Always do a spot test – it’s not worth starting a new skincare routine only to discover it not only doesn’t work for your skin but worse, it causes more concerns. I have developed DaisyBloom so that it is free from ingredients like parabens, sulphate, silicon, mineral oils etc to minimise many of the common reactions familiar to customers of mass commercial skincare brands.

4. What is my skin type?

I have learned that when developing a good skincare routine, it’s vitally important to understand your skin type. For my very dry skin, I take it easy with astringent toners and the like and, I have surely seen positive changes in my skin. Similarly, if you are prone to breakouts it is not a good idea to be using a lot of comedogenic products which block pores. And for very oily skin, there’s no need to skip moisturiser all together, but you also don’t want to be excessively oiling up your skin. Remember, you are unique! Always choose products that work with your particular skin type and not against it. Structure your daily skincare program around the exact needs of your skin type.

5. Am I being realistic?

As much as we might wish them to, skincare products will never perform miracles. If you’re spending a lot of energy on your current skincare regimen with limited results, it’s time to step back and reassess your expectations of skincare. Rather than jumping to a brand new routine, determine what results you really expect and go back to the basics to build a solid and tailored skincare routine.

Have you tried any of these ingredients in your products yet? Let us know your story 🙂
Wishing you limitless life & boundless love!
