Top 5 Skincare Ingredients to Treat Acne

3 min read

Hello gorgeous people! If you’re anything like me, at some point you too may have experienced occasional issues with acne. In developing DaisyBloom skincare products I have tried and tested many solutions over the years and have identified the top five topical skincare ingredients that treat acne with reliable results. So next time you are buying a skincare product for your acne, look for these ingredients:

1. Salicylic Acid

If mild or moderate acne is an issue for you, I recommend you add this ingredient to your acne care kit. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). It is lipophilic (meaning ‘oil-loving’) and penetrates pores and removes excess sebum. It encourages exfoliation and skin cell renewal, is anti-inflammatory, and can prevent follicles from becoming clogged with dead skin cells and excess oil. This is why I have developed a dedicated 2% salicylic acid exfoliant for more radiant skin

2. Niacinamide

We otherwise know this ingredient as Vitamin B3. It has an anti-inflammatory effect and so has advantages for skin that is prone to acne. Inflammation causes oxidative damage to sebum which can lead to pimples but applying niacinamide topically can reduce inflammation and decrease the likelihood of a blemish forming. It helps to regulate sebum, neutralise free radicals and works hard to keep the skin healthy and acne free. You will find this super helpful ingredient in DaisyBloom’s anti-ageing creams https://daisybloom.in/products/vitamin-c-night-cream?sku_id=41721726 and acne treatment products https://daisybloom.in/products/2-salicylic-spot-corrector-cream?sku_id=45533906 .

3. Chemical Peel

When used correctly, these can be super effective! Chemical peels use acids such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA, like glycolic acid) or beta hydroxy acids (BHA, like salicylic acid) effectively lift away the outer layer of the skin to reveal smoother, clearer skin underneath. Chemical peels are also an effective treatment for hyperpigmentation! And remember too, no matter which version you choose, the peels contain a higher version of these acids as compared to creams and serums, so always pair your treatment with a suitable sunblock to protect any new skin from UV exposure.

4. Azelaic Acid

This has to be one of my absolute favourite skincare ingredients to treat acne! We often hear about other ingredients but azelaic acid is one of the most underrated skincare ingredients when it comes to treating breakouts. I have found it to be a game-changer due to its antibacterial properties which reduce the growth of bacteria in the follicle while it decreases inflammation and helps lessen the build-up of dead skin cells and oil.

5. Glycolic Acid

This natural acid is found in plants including sugarcane, pineapple and beets and has considerable therapeutic value in treating acne. Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It works effectively on acne, acne scars, ageing skin and dark patches. It can also improve the texture of dull and uneven skin and can effectively treat hyperpigmentation too!
